S*T*A*R*T Maker Academy @ the J
Science * Technology * Art * in the RiverTowns

Saturdays, October 17-December 19

& January 9-February 27 & Beyond!

Curious-on-Hudson, in collaboration with the JCC on the Hudson, brings you a new innovative learning center for science, technology, and related arts where students can explore their world through fun and challenging experiences. What is a "Maker?" A Maker is someone who tinkers using all the knowledge, skills, materials and resources found in both the "lab" and the "Workshop" to experiment, grow, and create something new; melding science, technology, exploration and creativity - someone like you!

Each 8-week cycle offers three subjects. Register for one, two, or all three classes to fill your Saturday afternoons.

Engineering: Making Things Move
We are kicking off with the exploration of making things move...all sorts of things! Whether it flies, shoots, rolls, propels, or sputters along we make it move using different forces of energy from simple inventions to wind and solar. We'll build our own electrical and mechanical hand we'll make 'em move - one creative project per week.

Technology: Under the Hood
We know you love technology but have you had a chance to look under the hood? We'll be looking under the hood at some popular devices to learn how hardware and software work together to deliver the experiences we've all come to know as "the digital world." Based on age group, we'll explore a variety of devices to see what's in there. Younger students spend some time in the "take apart" stage and then go on to experiment with small projects involving simple electronics. By the end of this session, they'll have knowledge of how circuits are formed. Older students will disassemble and reassemble a computer to learn how these assemblies work together to make a working computer. B the end of this session, older kids will know how hardware and software come together to create a digital machine.

STEAM Art: The Art of Innovation
Leonardo DaVinci was not a scientist artist or engineer - he was all of these things (and more). In STEAM Art, we study and create art in new ways - by using different materials from the most basic to incorporating technology; we learn how closely "invention" and "innovation" are tied to art. Expect to do some very different art projects - large and small, individual and collaborative - with instructors who thing WAY outside the box. We'll explore lots of innovative art forms for further depth of study in future classes. This is a great intro to STEAM Art with lots more to come.
