The Power of Good

escape the Nazi's.

children have been found. In the Czech Republic and in Germany
this film is being used in conjunction with the book "Lottery of

Tu B'Shvat, February
3
Leviticus 19:23-24 contains the
following laws concerning fruit trees: You may not eat any fruit
of a tree for the first three years of its growth. Then, in
the fourth year, you must give all of the fruit to the priests.
In the fifth year you may eat the fruit yourself. The
fifteenth of the month of Shvat, Tu B'Shvat, is the New Year of
Trees. Any tree planted during the year before Tu B'Shvat
became a year old on Tu B'Shvat (even if it was planted the day
before). In ancient Israel the days before Tu B'Shvat were the
busiest time of the year for planting trees. When Jews were
exiled form the Land of Israel, we celebrated Tu B'Shvat by eating
fruit grown in the Land of Israel. In the sixteenth century,
kabbalists living in Tzfat created a special ritual meal, a mystical
Seder for Tu B'Shvat connecting the land's yearly cycle of growth
and rest with our own. After the Jewish National Fund
was created in 1901 it became a tradition to buy trees in the Land
of Israel on Tu B'Shvat. Today, many families have special Tu
B'Shvat meals where different fruits are tasted, a reminder of the
New Year of Trees in Israel.
