On September 21, 22 and 23, our JCC, along with the JCC of Mid-Westchester, the Rosenthal JCC of Northern Westchester, and many other agencies throughout the New York metropolitan area will be participating in the first annual Realabilities NY Disabilities Film Festival dedicated exclusively to issues related to the lives of people with disabilities.
 
The films range in scope and are about people with disabilities or were created by someone with a disability. They convey messages that are enlightening, creative and uplifting. Most films will be followed by discussion led by a person with a disability or an expert related to the film’s topic.

“Shameless: The Art of Disability”

Art, activism and disability are the starting point for what unfolds as a funny and intimate portrait of five surprising individuals and the world of disability culture, and ultimately, the transformative power of art.

 

4:00 p.m.

"War Eagle, Arkansas"

Based on a true story and staring Brian Dennehy and Mare Winningham, “War Eagle, Arkansas” is the story of two friends forced to examine their life-long friendship after high school graduation points them in very different directions.

"War Eagle, Arkansas" will be followed by "Stubborn and Spite," a three-minute short.

Followed by a discussion with Graham Gordy, screenwriter

“Outsider: the Life and Art of Judith Scott”

Deaf and mute, and institutionalized for over 35 years, Judith Scott was rescued by her twin sister, Joyce, and blossomed into a fabulous artist. This documentary highlights the power of love and family connection.

Followed by a discussion with Contemporary Art curator, Katonah Museum

"Snowcake"

Staring Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver, “Snowcake” is a film about friendship, trust, snow, acceptance, obsessive behavior, a dog called Marilyn, and about the power of friendship, no matter how eccentric, to change our lives and heal our hearts.

“Silent Games”

This is a film of the Israeli National Deaf Soccer Team, a group of disadvantaged sportsmen who count themselves lucky and are thankful for each day they are privileged to speak and hear through sport, and to represent their country with honor.

 

Realabilities NY Disabilities Film Festival is presented by The JCC of Manhattan and supported by UJA-Federation of New York.
